• DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING

This document is a realistic painting entitled Freedom from Want. It was painted by Norman Rockwell in 1943.

The scene takes place in a living-room.
There are eleven characters around a table. They are probably all members of a family.

In the middle, we can see a turkey. So, we can suppose this is Thanksgiving dinner.

At the top, we can see two people. Maybe, they are the grandparents. They are standing. The grandmother is carrying the turkey. She is wearing an apron. (carry =/= wear). The grandfather is standing close to (= next to) the grandmother.

All the other characters are sitting on both sides of the table. They are smiling. They are looking at each other but they are not looking at the turkey. They look happy!

In the foreground, we can see a plate of fruits.

In the bottom right-hand corner, a man is looking at us. As a consequence, we are included into the scene, we are part of the family.

The painter used light colours, mostly white and brown. The colour white stands for purity and the colour brown is used for the food.

The turkey is in the middle of the painting and it is huge. It makes it the most important element, the central element.
